“But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.” James 5:12
As a kid, I use to always ask my friends to “pinkie swear” that they would not share one of my secrets. I somehow believed that if they pinkie swore that meant they took it seriously and would keep it private. Boy was I wrong. I was wrong to assume that everyone had enough integrity to do what they say and I was wrong to have people swear to it.
When did things become so shaded or gray? Why does “yes” no longer always mean yes and “no” no longer always means no? When did society start to believe that it was okay to spread rumors, share secrets or disrespect people with not living up to what they say. God wants us to have the integrity it takes to mean yes and no when you say it.
